Join us Thursday May 24th, 7PM for a book launch close to our hearts and memories. Written by our good friend Tony Correia and illustrated by our own staff member Ken Boesem; we are pleased and proud to present the book launch and reading of Foodsluts at Doll & Penny’s Café.

When Tony Correia moved to Vancouver in 1988 with the return portion of a plane ticket purchased from a classified ad, he didn’t think he would last six months in the city. Twenty years and a popular newspaper serial later, comes Foodsluts at Doll & Penny’s Café, his memoir about the notorious drag cabaret located on Davie Street in the heart of Vancouver’s colourful West End.

Set in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Foodsluts follows Tony as he explores Vancouver’s counterculture during the height of the AIDS crisis. With a cast of characters that include drag queens, prostitutes, go-go boys and the religious right, Foodsluts revisits a period in Vancouver’s history that has all but been erased. With queer spaces in Vancouver disappearing faster than developers can build glass towers, Foodsluts paints a portrait of a vibrant gay enclave in the heart of a conservative stronghold that you have to read to believe.

Foodsluts at Doll & Penny’s Café collects the entire serial (published by Xtra in 2011) in a gorgeous paperback with previously published and unpublished material, as well as all 21 illustrations by artist Ken Boesem.

Foodsluts is a perfect summer read that will have you laughing and crying from beginning to end.

TONY CORREIA wrote ‘Queen’s Logic’ and ‘Foodsluts at Doll & Penny’s Café’ for Xtra in Vancouver. His essays and articles have appeared in The Globe & Mail, The San Francisco Courier, Lusitania, SubTerrain, The Vancouver Review and Sad Magazine as well as the anthologies, Second Person Queer and I Like It Like That.

KEN BOESEM writes and draws the serializedf comic strip ‘The Village’ which has run in Vancouver’s Xtra since 2005. His cartoons and illustrations have been published or reviewed in Maclean’s, Geist, Broken Pencil, OCW, The Vancouver Sun and The Stranger in addition to the comic book anthologies SPX 2003 and Funday Sunnies.

and more!

Ivan E. Coyote is one of Canada’s best-loved storytellers; her honest, wry, plain-spoken tales of growing up in the Yukon and living out loud on the west coast have attracted readers and live audiences around the world. For many years, Ivan has performed in high schools, where her talks have inspired and galvanized many young people to embrace their own sense of self and to be proud of who they are. One in Every Crowd, Ivan’s eighth book with Arsenal Pulp Press, is her first specifically for queer youth.

Comprised of new stories and others culled from previous collections, One in Every Crowd is for anyone who has ever felt different or alone in their struggle to be true to themselves. Included are stories about Ivan’s own tomboy past in Canada’s north, where playing hockey and wearing pants were the norm; and about her adult life in the big city, where she encounters both cruelty and kindness in unexpected places. Then there are the tales of family and friends who live their lives by example, like Francis, the curly-haired little boy who likes to wear dresses, and the brave kids she meets at queer youth camp.

Funny, inspiring, and full of heart, One in Every Crowd is really for everyone; it’s about embracing and celebrating difference and feeling comfortable in one’s own skin, no matter what the circumstance.

“Not only are Coyote’s stories a great regardless of age, the lessons and morals wrapped within them are just as important for adults to read.”

As part of our Reno Sale this April we have all MOGO WEAR t-shirts at 50% OFF.

MOGO [moh-goh] – noun / Men of gay origin

Their eco-friendly & anti-bacterial fabric will ensure you are free to parade in any PETA protests and prevent you from dealing with those nasty allergic rashes on your first date. All of their products are preshrunk so you don’t need to diet for a month trying to fit back into your favorite MOGO tee. Not to mention they chose fabrics that are extremely breathable, hygienic and odour resistant, keeping sport fanatics or party animals fresh all day and night. You’d also be happy to know that since all their prints are limited runs, you don’t have to worry about wearing a matching T-shirt with your friend (or enemy).

They purposely chose eco-friendly fabrics for most of their products, because it is important to them that while we all look good, we are not harming mother nature at the same time.

ChitoSanté
100% Polyester
It’s an environmentally friendly fabric, certified by the EPA and approved by the rainforest.
It’s soft and stretchy, it will hug you nicely whether you’re at the gym or at the club or just at home. It’s breathable and anti-bacterial… and breathing is always good.
It won’t shrink or pill, so go ahead, throw it into the dryer!
Made in Canada… and exclusive to MOGO.
product used in: MOGO signature tank tops

Bamboo
67% Bamboo / 27% Organic Cotton / 6% Spandex
It’s an eco-friendly sustainable fabric, because who doesn’t want to save our planet?
It’s WAY soft! He will want to feel it… before taking it off.
It’s extremely breathable… because you’ll never know when you need that extra high moisture absorption.
It’s already preshrunk, so you get to keep it instead of regifting it to your (best) friend.
Made in Canada… because that’s where we’re from!

So take a look at these t’s and drop by the store soon. From $34.50 to $42.00 these are stylish, comfortable, afforable t-shirts that stand out from the crowd.

Join us Wednesday March 14th for a reading and meet author Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore

Why Are F*ggots So Afraid of F*ggots?: Flaming Challenges to Masculinity, Objectification, and the Desire to Conform

Author; Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore

Why Are Faggots So Afraid of Faggots? challenges not just the violence of straight homophobia but the hypocrisy of mainstream gay norms that say the only way to stay safe is to act straight: get married, join the military, adopt kids! Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore reinvokes the anger, flamboyance, and subversion once thriving in gay subcultures in order to create something dangerous and lovely: an exploration of the perils of assimilation; a call for accountability; a vision for change. A sassy and splintering emergency intervention!

Publishers Weekly says: “These essays; alternately moving and sprightly, contemplative and outraged, display the power of presenting an alternative to the mainstream: a world of greater tolerance, acceptance, support, and creativity.”

Edition: pb
ISBN: 9781849350884
Publisher: AK Press
Release Date: 2012-02-01

Why Are F*ggots So Afraid of F*ggots?: Flaming Challenges to Masculinity, Objectification, and the Desire to Conform

Gay culture has become a nightmare of consumerism, whether it’s an endless quest for Absolut vodka, Diesel jeans, rainbow Hummers, pec implants, or Pottery Barn. Whatever happened to sexual flamboyance and gender liberation, an end to marriage, the military, and the nuclear family? As backrooms are shut down to make way for wedding vows, and gay sexual culture morphs into “straight-acting dudes hangin’ out,” what are the possibilities for a defiant faggotry that challenges the assimilationist norms of a corporate-cozy lifestyle?

Praise for Why Are Faggots So Afraid of Faggots?:
“You may have thought you understood human nature before you read this book; after reading it you will be humbled by all you failed to grasp until now. America invented identity politics but here those identities have been multiplied and articulated as never before” – Edmund White, author of A Boy’s Own Story

“These essays come like a plunge into a forest pool of revitalizing joy, honesty, and common sense. Read them. Now. No, not tomorrow. Now!” – Samuel R. Delany, author of Times Square Red, Times Square Blue

“This book plumbs the most important question facing queers in the 21st century: how the hell did we go from forming a crucial part of the ’60s “lib” rainbow, and from mastering, refining, and successfully deploying nonviolent resistance with ACT UP, only to end up creating for ourselves a world of martial and marital law every bit as sterile, constricting, and amoral as the world we once fled like the plague?” – Andy Bichlbaum of the Yes Men

“These essays excavate masculinity, unearthing the complex and pervasive structures that police and construct it and exposing the beautiful resilience of its self-avowed refusers and failures. These pieces telescope between analysis of the structures of gendered racialization that produce body norms and the daily physical and emotional traumas and toils of surviving and resisting, providing complex and badly needed ways to imagine and reimagine faggotry.” – Dean Spade, author of Normal Life: Administrative Violence, Critical Trans Politics and the Limits of Law

“Why Are Faggots So Afraid of Faggots is a collection of essays that not only examine the intricacies of the current socio-political climate within the realm of the gay/queer/trans world, but also show how important it is for us to interface and aggressively seek to inform the world view of the culture at large… Thanks, Mattilda, for the insights, intellectual rigor and the glittering ammunition with which to destroy and rebuild.” – Mx Justin Vivian Bond, singer, songwriter and author of Tango: My Childhood, Backwards and in High Heels

Called “startlingly bold and provocative” by Howard Zinn, and described as “a cross between Tinkerbell and a honky Malcolm X with a queer agenda” by The Austin Chronicle, Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore is undoubtedly one of America’s most outspoken queer critics. She is the author of two novels, including, most recently, So Many Ways to Sleep Badly, and is the editor of four nonfiction anthologies, including Nobody Passes: Rejecting the Rules of Gender and Conformity and That’s Revolting! Queer Strategies for Resisting Assimilation.

Mattilda is best known (so far!) as the author of That’s Revolting! Queer Strategies for Resisting Assimilation (Soft Skull Press, latest edition 2008), Nobody Passes: Rejecting the Rules of Gender and Conformity (Seal Press, 2007), and So Many Ways to Sleep Badly (City Lights, 2008).

During the initial testing of this already-revolutionary product, something unexpected occurred. A very unassuming women quietly admitted that she experienced one of the best orgasms of her life. Then another tentative voice echoed the same result. Then another, and another. Before long numerous women in the study group reported having intense orgasms when using the device.

The medical team was amazed at the unexpected feedback. Certainly not considered a negative side effect, they decided to explore the cause of the orgasms. Scientific research indicated that since the pelvic floor muscles are partly responsible for the involuntary contractions which occur during an orgasm, Intensity may also produce incredible pleasure.

Kegel Exercise (from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

A pelvic floor exercise, more commonly called a Kegel exercise (named after Dr. Arnold Kegel), consists of repeatedly contracting and relaxing the muscles that form part of the pelvic floor, now sometimes colloquially referred to as the “Kegel muscles”. Several tools exist to help with these exercises, though many are ineffective. Exercises are usually done to reduce urinary incontinence, aid with childbirth in women, and reduce premature ejaculatory occurrences in men, as well as to increase the size and intensity of erections.

The aim of Kegel exercises is to improve muscle tone by strengthening the pubococcygeus muscles of the pelvic floor. Kegel is a popular prescribed exercise for pregnant women to prepare the pelvic floor for physiological stresses of the later stages of pregnancy and vaginal childbirth. Kegel exercises are said to be good for treating vaginal prolapse and preventing uterine prolapse in women and for treating prostate pain and swelling resulting from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatitis in men. Kegel exercises may be beneficial in treating urinary incontinence in both men and women.Kegel exercises may also increase sexual gratification and aid in reducing premature ejaculation. Many actions that are controlled by Kegel muscles include “holding in” urine or avoiding defecation. Reproducing these types of muscle actions can yield stronger Kegel muscles.

A Kegel exerciser

Pelvic toning devices

A pelvic toning device (generically referred to as a Kegel exerciser, pelvic floor toner, pelvic floor muscle toner or pelvic toner) is a medical or pseudo-medical device designed to help women exercise their pelvic floor muscle and improve the muscle tone of the pubococcygeal or vaginal muscle.

The original pelvic toning device was the perineometer invented by Arnold Kegel to facilitate the measurement of the strength of the pubococcygeus muscle when it was resting and being actively squeezed – sometimes referred to as the Kegel tone.

Unfortunately his device was a combination of rubber balloons and tubes that measured pressure using a column of water. It was neither easy to use nor portable.

During the latter part of the 20th century a number of medical and pseudo-medical devices were developed and launched onto the market. Some of these are used in a clinical setting, but most are designed for women to use in the privacy of their own home.

Pelvic toning devices fall into a number of different types: barbells, vaginal weights or cones designed to be held in the vagina. The action of passively/actively retaining the device internally is supposed to improve muscle tone. Barbells are made of smooth, polished solid stainless steel, cylindrical in shape, with a rounded bulge at each end. They typically weigh one pound (454 g) and measure approximately 6¾ inches (17.1 cm) in length with a diameter of one inch (2.5 cm) at the widest part. Being made of stainless steel, vaginal barbells are nonporous and can be wiped clean with a cloth moistened with mild soap and water.

Electro-stimulation or TENS devices that administer an electrical current through an internal probe. The current stimulates the adjacent muscles to twitch.

Rubber resistance balls and indicators. These devices provide a nominal resistance to squeeze against. An advantage of rubber bulb devices is that they provide visual feedback (via a gauge) of how much pressure is being applied.

Progressive resistance vaginal exercisers with springs are the only devices that meet all of Kegel’s criteria. They provide a biofeedback that the correct muscles are being engaged and are capable of fulfilling the basic fundamentals of an exercise regime by applying a variable and increasing resistive force to maximise the exercise effort.

Unfortunately there are a number of products on the market that have no impact at all on the pubococcygeus muscle. If the PC muscle is not engaged then it is impossible to improve the muscle tone or strengthen the muscle. Devices that are used externally, for example between the thighs, may exercise the adductor muscle but do nothing for the pelvic floor.

Clinical research published in the British Medical Journal compared pelvic floor exercises, vaginal weights and electro-stimulation in a randomised trial. The research recommended that pelvic floor exercise should be the first choice of treatment for genuine stress incontinence because simple exercises proved to be far more effective than electro-stimulation or vaginal cones.

This situation was confirmed in a comprehensive review of the treatment of stress incontinence published in the British Journal of Urology International in 2010. The report author noted that electrical stimulation devices and weighted vaginal cones are not recommended by the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and “are not universally advocated by clinicians as they have yet to produce sufficient evidence of efficacy”.

Clinical trials of a progressive resistance vaginal exerciser concluded that the device was as effective as supervised pelvic floor muscle training, the gold standard treatment of the UK NHS where patients are referred to a specialist continence advisor for one on one training over a three month period. The report also noted that the device can help overcome the fundamental weaknesses associated with pelvic floor muscle exercises (PFME), i.e. poor training, lack of patient confidence and poor compliance with the exercise recommendations.

Key points noted by the research are that:
the device gives confidence to women that they were correctly contracting their pelvic floor, and this may be helpful encouragement when a woman is starting out on a regime of PFME.
the biofeedback given by the device may be particularly helpful to demonstrate to the woman that she is carrying out the PFME appropriately.
the device is particularly relevant to those women who do not consult their physician and wish to maintain confidentiality regarding their SUI symptom.

A progressive resistance vaginal exerciser is the only form of pelvic toning device available on prescription in the UK to women presenting with symptoms of urinary stress incontinence or pelvic floor weakness.

Benefits for women

Factors such as pregnancy, childbirth, aging, being overweight, and abdominal surgery such as cesarean section, often result in the weakening of the pelvic muscles. This can be assessed by either digital examination of vaginal pressure or using a Kegel perineometer. Kegel exercises are useful in regaining pelvic floor muscle strength in such cases.

It’s all just down the street from Little Sister’s, so drop by early or late – we’d love to see you and help you get in the Mardi Gras spirit.

Mardi Gras around the world; The terms “Mardi Gras”, “Mardi Gras season”, and “Carnival season”,in English, refer to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after Epiphany and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi gras is French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday; in English the day is sometimes referred to as Shrove Tuesday, from the word shrive, meaning “confess.” Related popular practices are associated with celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent. Popular practices include wearing masks and costumes, overturning social conventions, dancing, sports competitions, parades, etc. Similar expressions to Mardi Gras appear in other European languages sharing the Christian tradition. In English, the day is called Shrove Tuesday, associated with the religious requirement for confession before Lent begins.

In many areas, the term “Mardi Gras” has come to mean the whole period of activity related to the celebratory events, beyond just the single day. In some US cities, it is now called “Mardi Gras Day” or “Fat Tuesday”. The festival season varies from city to city, as some traditions consider Mardi Gras the entire period between Epiphany or Twelfth Night and Ash Wednesday. Others treat the final three-day period before Ash Wednesday as the Mardi Gras.[8] In Mobile, Alabama, Mardi Gras-associated social events begin in November, followed by mystic society balls on Thanksgiving, then New Year’s Eve, followed by parades and balls in January and February, celebrating up to midnight before Ash Wednesday. In earlier times parades were held on New Year’s Day. Other cities famous for Mardi Gras celebrations include Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Barranquilla, Colombia; Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago; Quebec City, Canada; Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico; and New Orleans, Louisiana, United States.

Sapesko Organic Hemp Rope is also available at our sister store; Sweet Adult Boutique.

DAVID SPRIGLE – PHOTO-BOOK DRAW!!!

We have a beautiful 2-volume set of hard-to-find photo-books compiled by American photographer David Sprigle (“Snap,” “Bottoms Up,” “Nice Ass!”) to give away.

VOLUME 1: MALE BONDING
99 black & white photos on high quality paper by 42 of the finest photographers in the genre (Clifford Baker, Kristen Bjorn, Bill Costa, Stanley Stellar, Robert Irwin, John Sonsini, Arthur Tress, Harriet Leibowitz and more!) reflect the title theme, at times sensuous, at times heroic and all very well done.

“MALE BONDING stands out for both the variety and artistic accomplishment of its images. (This) will appeal to anyone interested in fine art photography.” – A Different Light Books

VOLUME 2: BEASTS
An affectionate and stunning pageant of 99 colour and duotone photographs of men with animals (and men as animals) by 52 international photographers (Clifford Baker, Tom Bianchi, Reed Massengill, Rick Castro, Nina Glaser and more). BEASTS is for the connoisseur and collector of distinguished and captivating male photographic art.

“‘BEASTS is a brilliant take on the reciprocal male animal/animal male theme and features images that show not only the love for men of their pets, but also the sometimes rather uneasy relationship men have with animals, the danger and fear associated with the two for each other since the beginning of time.”

TO ENTER:
E-mail ‘ken@littlesisters.ca’ with the word “CONTEST” in the subject line or enter your name and phone #/e-mail on an entry form at the store.

We’ll do the draw on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18th at 1 pm. GOOD LUCK!!!

Latex, that shiny, skin-tight, sensual second-skin continues to attract more and more enthusiastic followers with each passing year. From kink and fetish magazines, club wear to hard-core sex clubs, latex provides many people with heightened sexual overtones that nothing else can come close to providing.

For many people the second-skin of shiny black (and other vibrant colours) not only feels great, it heightens their sexual energy, highlights all the appropriate body curves, muscles and for men can give a real boost to the form and heft of one’s package or muscle tone of the legs or chest and abs. For women skin-tight latex can give a gentle lift and control with just a millimeter of thickness, all the while looking astonishingly sexy.

The past few years has seen the emergence of latex within the gay community too, with hot young muscular men dressed from head to toe in shiny skin-tight latex, from solid black, bright reds and yellows to see-through skins that make as bold a statement as possible. Joining the ranks of bears, leather-men, bondage, and S/M communities’ latex has found a huge following of gay men totally turned on by the overtly sexual tones latex projects in just about any setting.

Little Sister’s now carries a full line of latex wear – from ladies hot pants and long stockings to skin-tight briefs for men with strategically placed holes of various sizes… for various exposure scenarios.

Take a look at our line of high quality latex wear here. (adults only)

Note; not all items presented online are available in the store. All items are stocked and available our second store Sweet Adult Boutique.

Latex can be difficult to get on, especially if skin tight. To remove the friction between the garment and your skin apply talc or a very thin coating of silicone lubricant to accommodate easier placement of the garment. Use only silicone or water based lubricants – never oil based. For more information on the use and care of latex clothing there are many free resources on the internet (search “latex clothing”) and fetish / latex specific magazines, or speak with a friend who already owns some latex. Latex must be cared for properly to maintain its shape and lustre.

Did you know; Latex is the stable dispersion (emulsion) of polymer micro-particles in an aqueous medium. Latexes may be natural or synthetic.

Latex as found in nature is a milky fluid found in 10% of all flowering plants (angiosperms). It is a complex emulsion consisting of proteins, alkaloids, starches, sugars, oils, tannins, resins, and gums that coagulates on exposure to air. It is usually exuded after tissue injury. In most plants, latex is white, but some have yellow, orange, or scarlet latex. The word is also used to refer to natural latex rubber; particularly for non-vulcanized rubber. Such is the case in products like latex gloves, latex condoms and latex clothing. It can also be made synthetically by polymerizing a monomer such as styrene that has been emulsified with surfactants.

Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?
by Jeanette Winterson
Knopf Canada | October 25, 2011 | Hardcover
$29.95

Heartbreaking and funny: the true story behind Jeanette”s bestselling and most beloved novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit.

In 1985, at twenty-five, Jeanette published Oranges, the story of a girl adopted by Pentecostal parents, supposed to grow up to be a missionary. Instead, she falls in love with a woman. Disaster.

Oranges became an international bestseller, inspired an award-winning BBC adaptation, and was semi-autobiographical. Mrs. Winterson, a thwarted giantess, loomed over the novel and the author”s life: when Jeanette left home at sixteen because she was in love with a woman, Mrs. Winterson asked her: Why be happy when you could be normal? This is Jeanette”s story–acute, fierce, celebratory–of a life”s work to find happiness: a search for belonging, love, identity, a home.

About a young girl locked out of her home, sitting on the doorstep all night, and a mother waiting for Armageddon with two sets of false teeth and a revolver in the duster drawer; about growing up in a northern industrial town; about the Universe as a Cosmic Dustbin. She thought she had written over the painful past until it returned to haunt her and sent her on a journey into madness and out again, in search of her biological mother. It is also about other people”s stories, showing how fiction and poetry can form a string of guiding lights, a life raft that supports us when we are sinking

by Armistead Maupin
$16.99
A hilarious and touching new installment of Armistead Maupin’s beloved Tales of the City series

Twenty years have passed since Mary Ann Singleton left her husband and child in San Francisco to pursue her dream of a television career in New York. Now a pair of personal calamities has driven her back to the city of her youth and into the arms of her oldest friend, Michael “Mouse” Tolliver, a gardener happily ensconced with his much-younger husband.

Mary Ann finds temporary refuge in the couple’s backyard cottage, where, at the unnerving age of fifty-seven, she licks her wounds and takes stock of her mistakes. Soon, with the help of Facebook and a few old friends, she begins to reengage with life, only to confront fresh terrors when her checkered past comes back to haunt her in a way she could never have imagined.

After the intimate first-person narrative of Maupin’s last novel, Michael Tolliver Lives, Mary Ann in Autumn marks the author’s return to the multicharacter plotlines and darkly comic themes of his earlier work. Among those caught in Mary Ann’s orbit are her estranged daughter, Shawna, a popular sex blogger; Jake Greenleaf, Michael’s transgendered gardening assistant; socialite DeDe Halcyon-Wilson; and the indefatigable Anna Madrigal, Mary Ann’s former landlady at 28 Barbary Lane.

More than three decades in the making, Armistead Maupin’s legendary Tales of the City series rolls into a new age, still sassy, irreverent, and curious, and still exploring the boundaries of the human experience with insight, compassion, and mordant wit.

The Stranger’s Child is Alan Hollinghurst’s masterpiece, the book that cements his position as one of the finest novelists of our time. In its scope, intelligence and elegance, The Stranger’s Child can be placed in the great tradition of the novel alongside epics by Marcel Proust and Anthony Powell. And yet, in its subtly political exploration of homosexuality in English society, it deals with an utterly contemporary subject in an utterly contemporary way.

We often highlight new editions of magazines when they arrive in store as many customers frequent the store looking for specific magazines. Of course it certainly doesn’t hurt sales to promote a magazine or two and the occasional highlight can direct avid readers to a great publication they didn’t even know existed. Maybe this post will turn you on to SAD Magazine.

Why the interest in SAD Mag? It’s their “special double issue 7/8, Vancouver’s Queer History” issue, and we just think many of you will find this particular issue entertaining and perhaps even enlightening.

Sad Magazine is local, published by local talent, and with this issue embracing Vancouver, it’s queer history and it’s queer people in an entertaining and informative format.

You’ll find articles on Ted Northe, 70’s LGBT nightlife, The Castle Pub, Tiko Kerr’s fight against HIV/AIDS, Immigration Laws, the DTES, Suburban Gays and much, much more.

Isolde N. Barron

As described on page one; “Sad Mag has always featured queer content, but until now it’s something that we didn’t make a big deal about. For us, queer content was and is an important part of our mandate: the queer community contributes to our city’s arts and cultural development. This issue, though, we mean it more than ever. We track the workings of the Dogwood Monarchist Society in the 60s, and we piece together sequins of Vancouver’s queer disco scene in the 70’s. We speak to a queer artist that fought a political battle for the treatment of AIDS victims in the 90’s, and we try to figure out what it means to be gain the 21st-century suburb.”

So, why not drop by and pick up a copy of the Special Double Issue 7/8? At just $3.95 it is definitely under-priced. After reading much of this issue I’m pretty sure I’ll be a loyal SAD Mag reader … I may even subscribe!

What appeals to me so much? It’s a good read (none of the usual fluff), based in Vancouver, a nice format and with so little advertising I’m actually reading the magazine, not a lot of gay travel or contact site ads (maybe it’s my age).

Plus – check out the photo spread by Brandon Gaukel “United In Art”. (Paige Frewer, Anthony Crosfield / Jim Dreichel, Vava Vunderbust, Dan Dumsha, Meryn Cadell, Noam Gagnon, Isolde N. Barron, Ivan E. Coyote, Morgan Brayton, Marcus Gerard Anthony Marshall) Really, every single image in this spread is impressive.

Please join Freehand Books and Little Sister’s for a special evening of literature and conversation commemorating the 10th anniversary of the tragic death of Aaron Webster on November 17th, 19:00 – 21:00

Stephen Gauer will read from his new novel, “Hold Me Now”: One Friday, Vancouver lawyer Paul Brenner has dinner with his son, Daniel. They talk about work, health, money, and music, and part ways. The following evening, Paul receives the phone call that is every parent’s worst nightmare: Daniel has been killed in Stanley Park.

“Hold Me Now” is an unflinching portrayal of a father’s grief, as Paul learns how very different the new world, a world without his son, will be for him. The investigation of Daniel’s murder, the trial, and the sentencing of the killer test Paul’s faith in the legal system. As both the media and public protest the overt role homophobia played in Daniel’s death, Paul struggles to cope, and begins to form reckless and dangerous habits. But with the love of two people in his life who sustain him, his mother, Jean, and his daughter, Elizabeth – he begins to comprehend an incomprehensible tragedy, and forgive an unforgiveable crime.

Stephen Gauer began developing “Hold Me Now” while attending the University of British Columbia in 2003. The Webster story inspired the central event of my novel and then I created a cast of characters to dramatize the questions that fascinated me: how would this type of crime shape and change the lives of a victim’s family and friends? What happens to family members “of the victim and accused” who fall outside the spotlight of media attention? I found myself developing a father character, who became the protagonist of my novel, says Gauer.

While not a fictional retelling of the Aaron Webster case, “Hold Me Now” intelligently interrogates important questions surrounding homophobia and hate crime in our communities.

Gauer will read a short excerpt from “Hold Me Now,” which will be followed by a facilitated discussion period and reception. Refreshments will be served, and everyone is welcome.

The Smart Girl’s Shame-Free Guide to Sex & Safety

Called “the hardest-working woman in feminism” by Michelle Tea, Jaclyn Friedman is a writer, performer, and activist. Her writing has been featured in Bitch Magazine, AlterNet, Women’s eNews, The Huffington Post,, PW.org, and PopPolitics. She’s also appeared as a guest blogger on Feministe, and in the Lambda Award nominated anthology Pinned Down By Pronouns. She has been a guest on numerous television and radio shows including Democracy Now!, BBC’s The World Tonight, To the Contrary, The Brian Lehrer Show, and GRITtv. Friedman holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College and has received a 2001 Cambridge Poetry Award, a 2004 Somerville Arts Council Artist Grant, and a recent fellowship from the Vermont Studio Center. She was named one of 2009’s “Top 40 Progressive Leaders Under 40″ by the New Leaders Council.

In her work as the Program Director for the Center for New Words, she programs and produces a 50 plus event-per-year series of author discussions, as well as writing workshops, open mics, political discussions, music concerts, book groups, and special events. She is Co-Founder and Co-Chair of WAM!, CNW’s conference on Women, Action & the Media. Before coming to CNW, Friedman worked as Program Director of the LiveSafe Foundation, an organization dedicated to teaching self-defense, de-escalation, and safety skills in communities with high rates of violence. In her spare time, Friedman plots world domination through truth and secretly watches reality television. Her favorite lipstick color is Wicked.

What You Really Really Want:
The Smart Girl’s Shame-Free Guide to Sex & Safety

In this empowering, accessible guide, Jaclyn Friedman – co-editor of “Yes Means Yes” gives young women the tools to decipher the modern world’s confusing, hypersexualized, sometimes dangerous landscape so they can define their own sexual identity. Friedman decries the hypocrisy and mixed messages of our culture (we’re failures if we don’t act sexy, but we’re sluts if we actually pursue sex; we need to be protected from rapists lurking in bushes, but deserve “whatever we get” if we have a drink at a party and wear a skirt), and encourages readers to separate fear from fact, decode the damaging messages all around them, and discover a healthy personal sexuality.

Educational and interactive, What You Really Really Want includes revealing quizzes, creative exercises, and reality-based advice about sex and sexuality today. With Friedman’s informed advice to guide them, readers will build new skills for safely expressing their sexuality with lovers and explore effective ways to talk about tricky issues with family and friends – and learn how to make the world a little safer for everyone else’s sexuality along the way.

How do I know if the person I’m flirting with is safe to date? What do I say to a friend who’s making questionable sexual choices? What if that friend is questioning my choices? How do I teach my kids to be safe and sane about sex without teaching them shame?

All women have questions at the intersections of sex and safety. And it’s no wonder: our culture bombards women and girls with mixed messages every day. We’re supposed to be innocent virgins who excel at stripper-pole workouts. We’re failures if we don’t act sexy, but we’re sluts if we actually pursue sex. We need to be protected from rapists lurking in bushes, but deserve “whatever we get” if we have a drink at a party and wear a skirt.

Jaclyn’s anthology Yes Means Yes laid out a vision of a world in which we all have the right to experience the pleasure of our bodies without shame, blame or fear. What You Really Really Want will help readers create that world for themselves, in their own lives. Using research, reality-based advice, revealing quizzes and creative exercises, What You Really Really Want will show readers the way to separate fear from fact, decode the dangerous messages all around us, and discover a healthy personal sexuality. We’ll build new skills for safely expressing that sexuality with lovers, explore effective ways to talk about tricky issues with family and friends, and learn how to make the world a little safer for everyone else’s sexuality along the way
